The Barbour Bedale wax jacket retains all the iconic components of the iconic Barbour jacket, including the “Stormfly” weatherproof studded fasteners, which help seal out the wind and rain and the total length two-way front zipper with the unmistakable brass ring pull. Two large bellows utility pockets are a valuable addition for holding essential bits and bobs, and the two handwarmer side pockets lined with moleskin keep the frost at bay. The classic corduroy sit-down collar with a throat flap, worn up, provides additional protection during the colder months. The functionality and simplicity of the Bedale continue to be a firm favourite amongst all generations.
Dame Margaret Barbour, the current chairman of J. Barbour & Sons, designed the Barbour Bedale wax jacket in 1980 as a horse-riding jacket for equestrian recreational and sports activities. The Bedale is a shorter, lightweight jacket, looser fitting with rear cooling vents and the crucial Nylon drip-strip inside, creating a barrier to the equines’ damp seeping inside the garment. It soon became prevalent in the United Kingdom, especially with pop stars and members of the Royal Family.
Manufactured with Barbour’s traditional medium weight 6oz wax cotton called Sylkoil, the versatile jacket design adds optional zippered hoods and heat-retaining liners. Making the Bedale a fantastic multipurpose jacket suitable for all activities and weather conditions.
The popularity of the Bedale Wax Jacket has led to a slimmer version for women, called the Beadnell, named after an unassuming fishing village in Northumberland.
